Bishkek, April 30 - Iran's President Mohammad Khatami here on Monday stressed that at the present time, Iran and the region should give priority to stability and security.
During a joint press conference with his Kyrgyz counterpart, Askar Akayev, he reiterated that the source of any crisis and insecurity is from abroad and not a regional one. He called on the regional states to further promote their cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, non-intervention in each other's domestic affairs, and common points.
On Afghan developments and the key role played by Tehran to settle the crisis there, President Khatami said Iran's policy in the neighbouring Afghanistan is against terrorism and is in line with establishment of stability and security in the region. The Islamic Republic of Iran succeeded in proving such a policy to the world people, he added. He further reiterated that Tehran considers its security as indebted to the regional security.
Iran's policy is based on detente, he said, stressing that Tehran does not welcome hostility with any world country. The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to ties with the regional states including Kyrgyzstan, he said. Expressing satisfaction with his talks with Kyrgyz counterpart, he expressed the hope that his visit to Bishkek would lead to further promotion of bilateral economic, trade and technical cooperation between the two states.
For his part, the Kyrgyz President said he was satisfied with the current visit of the Iranian delegation and inking five letters of understanding between the two countries.
Khatami ended his visit to Kyrgyzstan and left here Tuesday for Tajikistan.
