Iranian Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Asghar Soltanieh says Iran is building a global campaign against the assassination of its scientists.
He made the remarks at a gathering organized to raise awareness about the assassinations on the sidelines of the IAEA´s annual conference in Vienna on Tuesday.
The official noted that “the Islamic Republic of Iran is not going to retaliate.” Tehran was “committed to the very principles of Islam” and, accordingly, would never seek reprisal, Soltanieh noted.
He, however, denounced the foul play as ´inhuman´ and ´crime against humanity´ and said that the killings had to be investigated with the help of international institutions.
On November 29, 2010, unidentified terrorists detonated bombs attached to the vehicles of university professors Majid Shahriari and Fereydoun Abbasi -- the current Director of Iran´s Atomic Energy Organization. The former was killed immediately, but the latter and his wife survived the attack, sustaining minor injuries.
“We have to pursue the matter in the context of nuclear security. And from now on we want to have more and more public awareness, and we expect all the [IAEA] member states...to support this matter to protect all scientists of the whole world, particularly nuclear scientists,” Soltanieh said.
The IAEA conference also hosted speeches by some of the family members of victims.
On Monday, Abbasi denounced the ´heinous´ assassinations, describing the crimes as a disgrace to humanity, implicating foreign intelligence services, including the notorious British and Israeli spy agencies in masterminding and carrying out such terror operations.
Following a string of assassination attempts against Iranian scientists in 2010, Iran´s Intelligence Ministry announced that it had dismantled an Israeli network comprised of Israeli-trained spies and terrorists and made some related arrests.
The ministry revealed that the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, had used bases in certain European and non-European countries as well as Iran´s neighboring states in an attempt to achieve its terrorist objectives.
End.
