Iran urges West action on terrorism

Iran´s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has called for serious non-discriminatory action against terrorism, urging the West to stop providing a safe haven to terrorist groups.

“We recommend all countries to seriously cooperate to uproot terrorism throughout the world,” Mehmanparast said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

The spokesperson called on Western countries sheltering terrorist groups to take action against them and urged them to prosecute members of the groups.

He also warned against the spread of terrorism and said, if terrorism gains more power to further spread throughout the world, it will not be restricted to certain borders and it will even haunt those countries supporting it.

Mehmanparast further reiterated that the Islamic Republic will not allow any terrorist groups to operate against its territory.

Iran has recently deployed 5,000 military forces in the northwest of the country along its common border with the Iraqi Kurdistan region to fight counterrevolutionary groups.

Iran´s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has engaged in clashes with members of the Party of Free Life for Kurdistan (PJAK) in the country´s northwest, killing several members of the terrorist group.

PJAK is an offshoot of the internationally-recognized terrorist group, the Kurdistan Workers´ Party (PKK), which conducts deadly operations in western Iran, northern Iraq and southern Turkey. The leader of the group Rahman Haj-Ahmadi is now in Germany.

Tehran has criticized Berlin for hosting the leader. The Iranian Foreign Ministry earlier summoned the German charge d´affaires to protest Berlin´s harboring of the leader and call for his trial.

Moreover, in a phone conversation, Iran´s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also discussed the issue with his German counterpart, Guido Westerwelle.

Salehi stressed the importance of the German government putting Haj-Ahmadi on trial, given PJAK´s armed campaign against Iran.

End.
