Russia can deliver additional 50b cu m of gas to Germany: Putin

Germany could receive additional 50 billion cubic meters of gas from the Russian Shtokman gas field which is the largest in the world, Russian President Valdimir Putin announced during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the eastern city of Dresden on Tuesday.

"Germany is the main consumer of our energy resources. We are already delivering around 40 billion cubic meters of gas to Germany every year," Putin added.

Pointing to the development of the Shtokman gas field which is located in the icy Barents Sea, Putin added that Germany could receive an additional 50-55 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia.

Merkel and Putin reiterated the need for the construction of the Baltic Sea pipeline project which would link the Shtokman gas field with Europe.

Meanwhile both leaders discussed also international issues as well as expanding bilateral economic and cultural ties.

Talks between Merkel and Putin were aimed at a ’further deepening of German-Russian partnership’, German government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said earlier.
