India should import more: Bangladesh PM

Bangladesh-India-PM
Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has said India should import more from the country to reduce the widening trade imbalance.

She conveyed this to outgoing Indian High Commissioner Veena Sikri.

The Indian envoy thanked the prime minister for successfully holding SAARC summit in Dhaka and for the cooperation the government extended to her in discharging her duties.

Begum Khaleda appreciated the Indian envoy for her efforts in improving bilateral relations.

Later calling on Foreign Minister Morshed Khan, Sikri said she would miss Bangladesh, a country that had a special place in her heart for the warm hospitality she enjoyed here.

A Foreign Ministry release said Khan appreciated the positive approach shown by the high commissioner during her tenure.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has suggested that its differences with India on outstanding issues should be resolved through dialogue and wanted strengthening of people-to-people contact, said Bangladesh President Iajuddin Ahmed while extending an invitation to his counterpart A P J Abdul Kalam to visit his country.

The invitation was extended through outgoing Indian High Commissioner Veena Sikri.

Sikri also extended Kalam’s invitation to Ahmed to visit India.

"Through dialogue and discussion, we will be able to thrash out our differences, address the pinpricks and resolve the outstanding issues," he told Sikri when she made a farewell call on him at Bangabhaban in Dhaka yesterday.

The Indian envoy, who spent three years in Bangladesh, said proposals were there to set up different faculties of SAARC universities in the capitals of member states.
